Microsoft Excel is a very useful Office ever invented by Microsoft Corporation. For me this program is simply a combination of Microsoft Word plus a scientific calculator.

For this article I will just show you how to perform one of the basic Mathematical operations which is Addition in 3 different ways using Microsoft Excel.

I really do not know if there are more ways which are not listed in this article but let's just focus on what we have here right now.

STEPS:

We are going to Add some numbers using the Summation process Î£ (sigma symbol).

1. Open your Microsoft Excel. Type all the numbers that you wanted to add. See example below.

2. Now select all the numbers that you just typed. See the sample image below for visual sample of this steps.

3. After selecting, find and click the Summation button located in the upper right corner of your Excel.

4. If done successfully, you now have the sum of the numbers that you type. See the sample image below.

Another way of adding number in Excel is using the given format below.

e.g. 215+567+123

1. Go back to your Microsoft Excel, and type all the numbers given above. Type 215 in Cell A1, 567 in Cell A2, and 123 in Cell A3.

2. Now, select Cell A4 and type the (=) equal sign.

3. After typing the equal sign, click Cell A1, and then type the plus sign (+). Do not click anywhere inside Excel while doing these steps. See the image below.

4. After typing the plus sign (+), select A2 cell now.

5. Then, again, type the plus sign and select A3 cell now.

6. When done typing, just press the ENTER key to get the summation of the 3 given numbers.

The last way is using the given format below.

e.g. SUM(432+184+904)

1. Type 432 in cell A1, 184 in cell A2, and 904 in cell A3. After typing the 3 given numbers, in cell A4 type the equal sign followed by the word SUM (capital letters). See the image below for visual sample of this step.

2. Now after the word SUM, type the open parenthesis "(" symbol and then select cell A1. See the image below.

3. Now, type the plus sign symbol (+) and select cell A2. See image below for sample.

4. Lastly, again, type the plus sign (+), and select cell A3. Again do not click anywhere while performing these steps.

5. When done typing all the given 3 numbers, press your ENTER key to get the summation of the three numbers.

6. Done!

Notes:

  • You can also use the same process for subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers using Excel except for the first process which is using the Summation symbol which is exclusively for adding only. All you need to do is replace the + sign with minus (-) for subtraction, forward slash (/) for division, and asterisk (*) for multiplication.
